RAGHU THE WOOD-CUTTER
Raghu the wood-cutter :
Raghu, a wood-cutter, used to worship his god whenever he got time. He considered himself to be a great believer of God.
Yet Raghu often wondered why he stayed poor and prayed to God, "Why do you keep me so poor?"
A rabbit in distress :
Once when he was cutting wood in the forest, a rabbit came running to him gasping for breath. It said, "Sir, a hunter is after me. Could you please save me?"
"OK." said Raghu. "Just get underneath this heap of leaves." The rabbit quickly crept under the leaves. Raghu put some more leaves to hide the rabbit from the hunter.
Raghu was crooked :
Soon a hunter came running. " Have you seen a rabbit going this way ? " asked the hunter. "If you tell me, I will give you ten rupees."
"No" replied Raghu, but gestured pointing his fingers towards the leaves indicating that the rabbit was hiding there.
Raghu says to the rabbit that it was ungrateful :
However, the hunter in his hurry could not read Raghu's gestures and left.
The rabbit came out and thanked Raghu.
As the rabbit started to go, Raghu said, "You ungrateful animal, you are not even thanking the person who saved your life!"
The rabbit just smiled and ran away.
Who was the rabbit?
That night Raghu dreamt of Lord Vishnu. He said to Raghu, "It was l, who came to you as a rabbit, and my friend Shiva was the hunter. Since you always asked me why I have kept you poor, we came to test how good you are. You failed in the test. You are a wicked person even though you worship me."
The Lord continued, "I never help the wicked." Having said so, the Lord disappeared.
Raghu woke up. He fully understood, now, why he remained poor.
